This song starts with the Hail Mary, one of the best known Catholic prayers, and a beautiful prayer.  It is a request made to Mary to pray for us.  This is no different from asking a friend to pray for you when you are in a challenging situation.  The only difference is that the prayer is to the Mother of Jesus.  The Hail Mary prayer is derived from scripture.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Based on the words of the angel Gabriel at the Annunciation, Luke 1:28
Blessed are you among women and blest is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Taken from the words of St. Elizabeth when sees Mary for the first time after the Incarnation, Luke 1:42

Mary is an incredible inspiration.  She was asked to take on an enormous responsibility.  Jesus was born into the world as an ordinary, human child.  Mary had to protect and care for Him, and she had to teach Him.  Have you ever found yourself in a position where you are talking to a group and are teaching them, only to realize there is a true expert in the audience?  The feeling of doubt is incredible.  Mary had to teach Jewish tradition and faith to Jesus when he was a boy.  He wasn’t born with all the knowledge and wisdom he has in His divinity. He had to learn and grow.

Would you answer God’s call, to turn your life upside down and follow God’s plan?  Would you accept the responsibility of caring for our Lord?  I want to believe I would be as accepting as Mary, but I also know that my selfishness and focus on my desires would make it incredibly difficult to do as Mary did.  At nearly three times Mary’s age when the angel appeared to her, I’m just a child compared to her faith and wisdom.  And so I pray to be more like Mary.

Our Lady and the Church, by Hugo Rahner

Hail Mary, full of grace,
The Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women
And blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners now
And at the hour of death. Amen.

Gentle woman, quiet light,
Morning star, so strong and bright,
Gentle Mother, peaceful dove,
Teach us wisdom; teach us love.

You were chosen by the Father;
you were chosen for the Son.
You were chosen from all women
And for woman, shining one.

Gentle woman, quiet light,
Morning star, so strong and bright,
Gentle Mother, peaceful dove,
Teach us wisdom; teach us love.
